In response to inflationary pressures, the Reserve Bank of Australia increased interest rates to 4.1% in March, reversing previous cuts. The central bank estimates that higher fuel costs will push headline inflation toward 5% during the second quarter. The economic gloom has extended to households, with a separate survey indicating that consumer sentiment fell to its lowest point in over two years this April. The appetite for major purchases saw a sharp 15% contraction as Australians reduced discretionary spending.
