Australia Consumer Sentiment Slips to 80.6 in June
The Westpac index fell 2.9% to 80.6 as rising costs squeezed family finances. Sentiment was also hit by higher petrol prices and proposed housing tax changes.
Australia consumer sentiment fell 2.9% to 80.6 in June as rising borrowing costs and fuel prices pressured household budgets. This reading sits among the weakest levels in the survey's 50-year history, significantly below the neutral 100 mark. The decline signals a continued pullback in discretionary spending as the Reserve Bank of Australia maintains its restrictive policy stance.
### Cost Pressures Erode Household Finances The 80.6 reading indicates that pessimists outnumber optimists. Westpac Banking Corp head of macro-forecasting Matthew Hassan noted the index is back among the weakest levels ever recorded. Family finance expectations fell sharply in June while the long-term economic outlook darkened.
