AMERICAN AIRLINES GROUP INC has announced a series of increases to checked baggage fees and a reduction in perks for economy passengers. This move positions the carrier as one of the last major operators in the United States to adjust its pricing strategy in response to escalating operational costs. The global aviation sector is currently grappling with a significant surge in jet fuel prices. According to data from the International Air Transport Association, fuel costs have climbed from an average of $85 to $90 per barrel in February to approximately $209 per barrel. This spike is largely attributed to geopolitical instability involving Iran, which has impacted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz—a critical maritime route for global oil supplies. Starting Thursday, the airline will implement a $10 increase for the first and second checked bags on domestic and short-haul international routes. Additionally, the cost for a third checked bag will rise by $50 to a total of $200. While this specific pricing structure was already active in certain regions, including Canada, it will now see broader application. Further adjustments are scheduled for May 18, specifically targeting basic economy tickets. These travelers will face an additional $5 surcharge for checked bags, lose eligibility for complimentary system-wide upgrades, and be required to pay a fee for seat selection. Conversely, passengers traveling in premium cabins will continue to receive free baggage allowances on both domestic and international flights.
