Amazon to Invest $25 Billion in AI Startup Anthropic
Amazon will invest $25 billion in Anthropic as the startup spends $100 billion on cloud tech. The deal aims to boost AI capacity using custom Trainium chips.
AMAZON.COM INC has announced a significant expansion of its partnership with artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, committing to an investment of up to $25 billion. This capital injection is part of a massive $100 billion cloud computing agreement that will see Anthropic utilize Amazon’s infrastructure over the next decade to develop and scale its AI models.
The investment structure involves an immediate $5 billion payment to Anthropic, with an additional $20 billion slated for the future contingent on the achievement of specific commercial milestones. This latest commitment follows a previous $8 billion investment by the Seattle-based technology giant.

The deal deepens the relationship between the two firms as Anthropic seeks to secure the computing capacity necessary to compete in the generative AI sector. Amazon continues to be a leading provider of the critical infrastructure required for the AI boom, estimating that it will spend approximately $200 billion on capital expenditures this year, largely for AI development.
Anthropic, the developer of the Claude AI models, expects to leverage Amazon’s custom silicon to enhance its capabilities. The startup aims to bring roughly 1 gigawatt of capacity online using Trainium2 and Trainium3 chips by the end of the year, with a long-term goal of securing up to 5 gigawatts of such capacity.
Anthropics use of Trainium chips reflects the progress weve made together on custom silicon.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated that the collaboration demonstrates the success of the company's custom hardware initiatives. While Amazon has worked to build momentum for its own AI models, such as Nova, it is also making substantial investments in other major AI players. This new deal follows an announcement earlier this year that Amazon would invest up to $50 billion in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.
As Anthropic focuses on releasing models tailored for coding and design, Amazon is actively seeking a broader customer base for its specialized AI training and inference chips. Following the announcement of the expanded partnership, Amazon shares rose approximately 2.7% in extended trading.
