Amazon Chile data center proceeds after legal victory
Chilean officials ruled an Amazon data center can proceed despite local opposition. The decision supports a 4 billion dollar investment over 15 years.
AMAZON.COM INC will proceed with a $4 billion data center expansion in Chile after local residents lost an environmental challenge. The investment spans 15 years and establishes Santiago as a primary Latin American hub alongside Brazil and Mexico sites. The ruling clears a major regulatory hurdle for Amazon's cloud infrastructure growth in a region increasingly focused on digital connectivity.
Environmental authorities ruled in early April that the project could move ahead. Residents argued the permit ignored a necessary high-voltage power line required to feed the site. Regulators decided any future power line plans require separate assessments.
