US initiated a broad selloff across multiple sectors this week, driven by mounting concerns that rapid artificial intelligence product announcements and model upgrades could disrupt established business models. The market rout was primarily triggered by a flurry of AI model upgrades and fresh releases, including Anthropic’s unveiling of a legal AI plug-in. This ongoing event has caused sharp valuation declines in the software sector and spread into private credit, real estate services, insurance, brokerage, data analytics, legal services, and logistics.
The scale of the selloff is reflected in the S&P 500 Software & Services index, which has lost approximately $2 trillion in market value since its October peak, with about half of that decline occurring in the past two weeks. The S&P 500 insurance index recorded its largest single-day drop since mid-October, while the Dow Jones Transportation Average fell 4.4%. Individual stocks have also seen significant pressure, with S&P Global Inc. slumping more than 25% in February alone.
