African Bunkering Hubs Gain from Global Shipping Shifts
African bunkering hubs expand as shipping companies reroute vessels around the Cape of Good Hope. This shift follows prolonged instability in the Middle East.
Ship-refuelling companies along the coast of Africa are seeing a surge in business as global shipping routes are reshaped by conflict in the Middle East. With vessels increasingly avoiding the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, the continent is solidifying its role as a critical bunkering hub. Reports from Singapore and other maritime centers indicate that this shift is driven by a need for safety amidst ongoing regional volatility.
The rerouting trend began in late 2023 following attacks on shipping and has been reinforced by military strikes involving the United States and Israel. Recent tensions with Iran and the potential for further disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz have led major carriers, including Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd AG, to adopt the Cape of Good Hope route as a long-term operational reality.
