Absa targets African expansion as annual earnings rise
Absa Group reported a 12.25% rise in annual earnings as it accelerates expansion in Uganda and Tanzania. The bank aims to capture regional opportunities.
ABSA GROUP LTD is accelerating its expansion across the African continent as regions outside its home market of South Africa emerge as primary growth engines. CEO Kenny Fihla indicated that while South Africa remains the institution's largest market, the bank is actively seeking to capitalize on the vacuum left by retreating European lenders.
Regional financial institutions are increasingly targeting East Africa, a region viewed as a critical trade corridor linking the continent with the Middle East, India, and Asia. This strategic shift follows a broader trend of local players racing to secure market share as international competitors scale back their African operations.
